Interview with Willow Bradner, owner

How did you get involved in this business?
I spent a couple years in college torturing my guidance counselor for a degree that included art and talking all day. Obviously, that degree does not exist, or I would have majored in it. Luckily, I got my haircut at a super hip salon and realized as the stylist chopped 10 inches off my head that she was doing art and talking all day. So I found myself turning my 4.0 college career into a cosmetology license from Emily Griffith Opportunity School. I have never looked back. Twelve years later, I have a flourishing business and I am living my passion every day.

What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
I call myself a hair therapist. I do hair, I am an artist, and I love painting hair and styling for every individual. Moreover, my space is a place where people feel like they can literally and figuratively let their hair down. I have coached people through breakups and have seen people through their first years of marriage, parenting and just about every other major life event. I get calls at night and on the weekends from some clients needing a little extra encouragement or advice to help them get through a life moment. I am so honored and privileged that my friends and clients trust me and consider my opinion. It is through the eyes of someone else that you can truly see yourself. I do not just do hair. I convey your inner self through color and style individually designed for you. I work on your hair, while working with you on you. It’s a package deal. I am a hair therapist.

What do you like best about your line of work?
I love the people. I genuinely learn so much from everyone who sits in my chair. I think often that if there was a life Ph.D, I could possibly have acquired it based on the folks that I have had the privilege of knowing.

What is your business’ biggest challenge?
My challenge always is in the interpretation of style. I love when people bring pictures of what they want. I am always honest: None of us are going to look like Jennifer Aniston, but her hair really is amazing. So, if you want that color and Olivia Munn’s haircut, I can do that. I take my time on every consultation and I spend time trying to achieve my clients’ hair goals. It is a challenge. I am a pleaser and a perfectionist — a lethal and emotional combination. I will not let you walk out of my salon if you are not happy, and I beat myself up about it until you are.

Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
I am super shy. It doesn’t seem that way because I can talk to anyone about anything in my salon, one on one. But I am overwhelmed by big crowds and even more in small groups where I don’t know anyone. I prefer to spend my time with people I know. That said, I love having people to my home or salon as it is where I am most comfortable.
